Google Ads Performance Dashboard: How to Build One in Looker Studio

Build a Google Ads dashboard with spend, conversions, ROAS and traffic-quality checks, while avoiding misleading calculations and data joins.

Google Ads Performance Dashboard: How to Build One in Looker Studio

Quick Answer: A Google Ads performance dashboard is a single Looker Studio report that pulls spend, clicks, conversions, and revenue from your Google Ads account and shows them next to each other, so you can spot waste in minutes instead of digging through the Google Ads UI. To build one, connect the native Google Ads connector, add a scorecard row (Cost, Clicks, Conversions, Cost/Conv., ROAS), a trend chart with a previous-period comparison, a campaign table, and a keyword or search-term table. Setup takes roughly 30 to 60 minutes. Add a view of invalid and suspicious traffic to help investigate data quality; a dashboard alone cannot establish fraud.

What is a Google Ads performance dashboard?

A Google Ads performance dashboard is a visual report that tracks the key metrics of your campaigns in one place and refreshes automatically from your account. Looker Studio (Google's free reporting tool) is the most common way to build one because it connects to Google Ads natively and also lets you blend in GA4, Search Console, and CRM data.

A good dashboard answers three questions fast: how much am I spending, what am I getting for it, and where is money being wasted?

What should a Google Ads performance dashboard include?

Start with one page and five blocks. Every extra chart should answer a decision you actually make, such as "which campaign gets more budget?"

BlockMetricsQuestion it answers
ScorecardsCost, Clicks, Conversions, Cost/Conv., Conv. value, ROASIs the account healthy this period?
Trend chartCost vs. Conversions by day or week, with previous-period comparisonIs performance rising or slipping?
Campaign tableCampaign, Cost, Clicks, CTR, Avg. CPC, Conv., Conv. rate, Cost/Conv., ROASWhich campaigns deserve more or less budget?
Keyword / search-term tableKeyword, Match type, Impr., Clicks, Cost, Conv.Where am I paying for clicks that never convert?
Device and geo breakdownDevice, Country/Region, Cost, Conv. rateDo mobile or certain regions underperform?

Two layout rules keep it readable. Put scorecards at the top and detail tables below, and add a date-range control plus filters for campaign type, device, and country so one report serves several people.

The free and paid templates that currently rank for this topic mostly cover this ground (impressions, clicks, CTR, CPC, conversions, spend, device and auction-insight views). What they rarely cover is data quality, which the invalid-traffic section below covers.

How do you build a Google Ads dashboard in Looker Studio, step by step?

You need a Google account with access to both Looker Studio and the Google Ads account (read-only access to Google Ads is enough). If you manage clients through a manager (MCC) account, connect the individual client account, not the manager.

  1. Create a blank report. Open Looker Studio, click Create, then Report. Looker Studio opens the data picker immediately.
  2. Add the Google Ads connector. Choose "Google Ads" from the Google connectors, authorize, then select the account. If you work from an MCC, choose the client account itself.
  3. Check the data source fields. In the data source editor, confirm that Cost, Clicks, Impressions, Conversions, and Conversion value show as numbers (not text), and that currency matches your account. Fix types here once, instead of fighting them in every chart.
  4. Add calculated fields. Create ROAS as SUM(Conv. value) / SUM(Cost) and, if you want it, a custom Cost per Conversion as SUM(Cost) / SUM(Conversions) so you control division-by-zero handling with CASE WHEN SUM(Conversions) = 0 THEN NULL ELSE SUM(Cost) / SUM(Conversions) END.
  5. Build the scorecard row. Insert scorecards for Cost, Clicks, Conversions, Cost/Conv., and ROAS. Turn on "Comparison date range" and set it to Previous period so each card shows the change.
  6. Add the trend chart. Insert a time-series chart with Date as the dimension and Cost plus Conversions as metrics. Use a combo chart (bars for cost, a line for conversions) with a secondary axis.
  7. Add the campaign table. Insert a table with Campaign as the dimension and the metrics from the table above. Add conditional formatting, for example red when Cost/Conv. is above your target and green when it is below.
  8. Add the keyword / search-term table. Use a compatible Keyword dimension; if Search term is unavailable in the connector, export the Google Ads search-term report separately, sort by Cost descending, and filter to Conversions = 0. This one table is usually where the first budget savings show up.
  9. Add controls. Insert a date-range control, plus drop-down filters for Campaign, Device, and Country. Place them in a header bar so they apply to the whole page.
  10. Share it. Use Share to give view access to your team or client, or schedule a weekly PDF email. Keep edit access with yourself and one backup.

Want to skip the build? Several free templates (from vendors such as Windsor.ai, Porter, and Coupler.io) use the same structure. Copy the template, replace the data source with your own Google Ads account, and then do steps 3 and 4 above to make sure fields and currency are correct.

How long does it take? About 30 to 60 minutes for the first version if you know the metrics you want, longer if you add multiple pages.

How do you add an invalid traffic and click fraud view to the dashboard?

Spend and conversions tell you what happened. They do not tell you whether the clicks behind them were real. A dashboard that ignores traffic quality can look healthy while part of your budget goes to bots, click farms, or competitors.

Add a small "Traffic Quality" block in three steps:

  1. Show Google's own invalid-click numbers. Check whether Invalid clicks and Invalid click rate are available with your selected connector and chart dimensions. Add compatible fields as scorecards; if unavailable, export campaign-level reports from Google Ads to a separate data source. Keep in mind this only shows what Google detected and filtered, not everything that was fake.
  2. Blend in GA4 behavior data. Aggregate each source to the same grain, such as date and a mapped campaign ID, before joining; do not join detailed tables on date alone, then compare Clicks (Ads) against Sessions and Engaged sessions (GA4). A wide gap between paid clicks and sessions, or very low engagement on one campaign, is a red flag worth investigating.
  3. Flag suspicious patterns with a table. Break clicks down by Campaign, Device, Country, and Hour of day. Look for sudden spikes, clicks from regions you do not target, near-zero conversion rates with high CTR, and repeated clicks at odd hours.

If a pattern shows up, the fix is not in Looker Studio. Use multiple click-level signals (network, device, behavior and timing) to investigate it; no single fingerprint or IP address proves fraud. Apply exclusions only where supported and justified, for example by adding IP exclusions in Google Ads or using a dedicated click fraud protection tool.

What are the most common mistakes when building a Google Ads dashboard?

  • Too many charts. A dashboard with 30 widgets gets ignored. Keep page one to one screen.
  • Judging today's numbers. Conversions can be reported with a delay, so the last few days often look worse than they are. Compare complete periods, or note the lag on the page.
  • Mismatched numbers. Looker Studio, Google Ads, and GA4 will not match exactly because of attribution, time zones, and conversion definitions. Decide which system is the source of truth for each metric and say so on the report.
  • Wrong currency or time zone. Check both in the data source settings, especially for accounts that bill in a different currency than they report.
  • No targets. A number without a goal does not drive action. Add target lines or conditional colors for Cost/Conv. and ROAS.
  • Treating all clicks as real. Without a traffic quality view, wasted spend hides inside healthy-looking CTR.

Dashboard launch checklist

  • Connector authorized with read access to the correct Google Ads account
  • Field types, currency, and time zone verified in the data source
  • ROAS and Cost/Conv. calculated fields created and tested on a day with zero conversions
  • Scorecards with previous-period comparison
  • Trend chart, campaign table, and zero-conversion search-term table
  • Date, campaign, device, and country controls
  • Traffic quality block with invalid clicks and a GA4 comparison
  • Sharing set to view-only for stakeholders, with a scheduled weekly email

FAQ

Is Looker Studio free for Google Ads dashboards?

Yes. Looker Studio and its native Google Ads connector are free. Paid connectors or templates are only needed if you want to combine many ad platforms in one data source.

How often does the dashboard update?

The native connector refreshes from Google Ads on a regular cycle, and you can set the report's data freshness in the data source settings. For daily decisions this is enough; do not rely on it for minute-level monitoring.

Why don't my Looker Studio numbers match the Google Ads interface?

Common causes are a different date range or time zone, conversion lag, different conversion actions selected, or a currency mismatch. Compare one campaign over one fully completed day to find the cause.

What is the best Google Ads template for Looker Studio?

The best one is the one that covers your decisions. A free template with scorecards, a campaign table, and a keyword table is enough to start; customize from there instead of buying a complex pack.

Can I show several Google Ads accounts in one report?

Yes. Add each account as its own data source, or use a connector that supports multiple accounts, and add an account filter. For agencies, one template copied per client is easier to maintain than one giant report.

Can a dashboard detect click fraud?

It can show warning signs, such as invalid clicks, odd traffic spikes, or high clicks with no engagement, but it cannot identify who clicked or block them. Detection and blocking need click-level tracking.

How do I report on conversions that happen offline?

Import offline conversions into Google Ads first, then they appear in the connector as conversions. The dashboard only displays what Google Ads already holds.

Next Steps

Build one page with scorecards, a trend chart, a campaign table, and a zero-conversion search-term table, then add a traffic quality block so you know the clicks behind the numbers are real. A dashboard is only worth keeping if it changes a budget or bid decision every week.

Use this dashboard alongside a PPC audit. Before treating weak engagement as fraud, follow the GA4 bot traffic investigation steps.
